Hair fall is a problem encountered by men and women of all ages. According to dermatologists, hair loss of 50-100 strands daily is absolutely normal, while excessive hair fall can lead to bald patches on the scalp.
Excessive hair fall may be attributed to a variety of causes, ranging from poor dietary habits, unhealthy lifestyle, heredity, deficiency of certain nutrients, hormonal changes to stress and fatigue. Factors such as lack of scalp hygiene, overuse of harsh hair care products and regular styling treatments may also be responsible for hair loss.
Dermatological treatment and expensive hair care products may not only take a toll on one’s pocket, they can also have many side effects. There are a number of home remedies that can help reduce hair fall. Some of these are listed below:
Coconut milk and oil
Being rich in fats and minerals, both act as natural hair tonics which strengthen hair roots. Regular massage with warm coconut oil can curb hair loss. You can also mix coconut oil and amla (Indian gooseberry) oil in equal quantities, and use it for massage. Similarly, coconut milk, obtained by squeezing fresh grated coconut, can be applied to bald patches, left overnight and rinsed in the morning, to promote hair growth.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Amla has potent anti-oxidants and vitamin C , which are beneficial for hair as well as general body health. You can crush amla to extract the juice and mix 2 teaspoons of this juice with an equal quantity of lemon juice. Apply this mixture to the scalp and allow it to dry. Rinse it off with warm water.
Alternatively, you can make this mixture using dry amla powder, which is readily available in the market.
Another wonderful natural hair care product. Apply a mixture of one egg white and a teaspoon of olive oil to the scalp for 15-20 minutes, and then wash hair with warm water. Sulphur, an active ingredient found in eggs, helps strengthen hair roots and prevents breakage of hair.
Fenugreek (methi) seeds
A cup of fenugreek seeds soaked overnight is used for this purpose. Grind the seeds into a fine paste by adding some water. Application of this paste to the scalp for half hour followed by a shower with lukewarm water is an excellent home remedy for hair fall.
A magical hair fall treatment. You can massage your scalp with juice of a medium-sized onion mixed with 2 teaspoons of honey and some rose water (to ward off the repulsive odor). Wash your hair after an hour with a mild shampoo.
Green tea is loaded with anti-oxidants which can do wonders for hair and scalp health. Brewed in a cup of water, it can be applied to the scalp for an hour and rinsed with cold water afterwards.
Grind fresh coriander leaves to a paste by adding some water. Using this paste as a scalp tonic once a week can alleviate hair loss to a great extent.
Can be boiled in some coconut oil to formulate a potent hair tonic. Regular massage with this oil twice a week can promote hair growth and reduce hair fall. You can also prepare a home-made herbal shampoo by grinding 15-20 curry leaves along with one lemon peel, 3 tablespoons soap nut powder , 2 tablespoons fenugreek seeds and 2 tablespoons green grams. It can be stored in a glass bottle for later use.
Boil henna leaves in some mustard oil and strain to make herbal hair oil at home. It can be mixed with some coconut oil and used for regular scalp massage to prevent hair loss. Alternatively, a hair pack prepared by mixing a cup of henna powder with half a cup of curd can be applied for an hour and then rinsed off with warm water.
Neem (margosa) leaves
Neem leaves can be used to prepare a concoction by boiling them in water and then straining the liquid. Washing hair with this water provides strength and shine to the hair.
Almonds are an age-old remedy for hair loss. Regular use of almond oil for scalp massage can do wonders for one’s hair fall problem. You can mix it with some castor oil for better results.
One of the simplest and most easily available home remedies for hair fall. You can add it to coconut or olive oil and use it for scalp massage. Rinse hair using a mild shampoo after half an hour. Lemon juice also provides relief from dandruff.
Aloe vera gel
Applied to the scalp before shampooing not only leads to reduction in hair fall but also promotes hair growth. Aloe also acts as a natural hair conditioner.
In addition to these home remedies, some simple tips can be followed to reduce hair fall. A balanced diet coupled with hair and scalp hygiene is the first step towards healthy hair. Drink plenty of water, avoid junk food and carbonated drinks, and get plenty of restful sleep.
Use mild hair-care products and avoid harsh chemical hair dyes, oils and shampoos. Do not comb wet hair as it leads to hair breakage. Avoid using very hot water to wash hair and frequent hair styling that involves use of heat and chemicals. Regular massage and protection of hair from direct sunlight are other factors to promote a healthy scalp without hair loss.
