Uses of Alum (Fitkari)

2970

Most of us have probably forgotten that such a thing even exists. In Ayurveda, Alum is called Phitkari or Sourashtri. It is an ingenious product that can be used for innumerable purposes other than shaving. Alum has been used since the ancient times for its wonderful results and I don’t see any reason to not do that even now. It is a pocket-friendly, efficient product that can be used for home remedies. It can be powdered in a mortar and pestle into fine gradients and it’s ready for use. So much so that Alum can be used to treat minor diseases at home itself. So, without much ado, let’s get on with it’s uses:

  • Alum for cracked heels

Cracked heels are a problem for a lot of people and it can become very painful if not treated immediately. Thankfully, we have Alum.  For this remedy alum is heated in a small, empty vessel. When alum is heated, it liquefies and foams up. Once all the water evaporates, we are left with a crumbly mixture. Once it cools down, it is powdered and mixed with coconut oil and applied on the heels. This remedy gives amazingly good relief, if applied regularly for some time.

  • Alum for water purification

This technique is perhaps the most cost efficient use of Alum. For people who cannot afford a water purifier, this can be considered a life saviour. In order to purify muddy/unclean water, we need to powder the alum first and then add about 1 gm of powdered alum for every litre of muddy water. As a result, the mud settles down at the bottom and we are left with clean water, ready for use. Next time you go on a camping trip, carry a small block of Alum with you.

  • Alum for hair removal

For women, this tip is going to save up a lot of money which would’ve been otherwise spent on trips to the beauty parlour. Alum can be effectively used for body hair removal for women. A mixture of alum powder and water or better still rosewater can be applied all over the body. This paste tends to retard the body hair growth over time.

  • Alum for cold sores

Add a drop of water to a pinch of alum powder and apply it on the cold sore. Leave it for 30 seconds and wash it off thoroughly. Repeat this process twice or thrice daily to see the visible results within 3 days.

  • Alum for urination problem

If someone suffers from difficulty in urinating then the problem can be solved by dissolving some Alum in drinking water. Drinking this alum infused water, can even make you get rid of stone problem in 4-5 days.

  • Alum for fever

Fitkari can be used to treat fever at home too. The remedy is simple as well.  Mix some Fitkari into Sonth (Dried ginger) and eat it with Batasha, Indian Sweet biscuit to cure fever.
